Continue investment in leak detection and expand programs to reduce overall water loss through conveyance systems.
The City will continue to invest in and expand leak detection programs that reduce water loss in the conveyance system, including the evaluation of additional stringent requirements for allowable leakage for new and large diameter pipes. DWU has an extensive leak detection and repair program and is committed to maintaining a rate of less than 10 percent for unaccounted water losses in its water system.
Wholesale customers comprise of about 38 percent of DWU’s total treated water demand. The City will encourage customer cities served by DWU to follow similar stringent guidelines during water loss audits and consider adding these requirements in the Wholesale Service Agreement contracts. DWU will work with customer cities to establish an annual reduction target over the next 10-years to reduce water loss through the conveyance system.
